Boggle alternatives: seven word grids, and the one that never runs dry

Every Boggle-style game has the same limit: the grid is fixed, so after a minute the easy words are gone and the round is spent hunting for leftovers. Below are seven games that link neighbouring letters on a grid, compared on the one thing Boggle never solved: what happens when the letters run out.

Seven Boggle alternatives on one criterion: does the grid stay alive?

If you play Word Hunt on iMessage

Word Hunt is the most played Boggle variant today, because it is built into iMessage: 80 seconds, a 4 × 4 grid, and whoever finds the most points wins. Its limit is the same as Boggle’s: a bad grid is a bad round, and the best players spend the last 30 seconds on 3-letter scraps. Lettrio keeps the swipe-to-link gesture and removes the dead grid: played tiles fall out and new ones drop in.

If you play Squaredle every morning

Squaredle is the daily version of the idea: one grid, find every word, no clock. It is excellent and free for two grids a day; more puzzles need a subscription. Lettrio’s daily challenge is the timed cousin: the same grid for everyone, 3 tries of 60 seconds, a score rather than a checklist, and unlimited rounds in the app with no subscription.

How Lettrio handles the empty grid

Every accepted word removes its letters and drops new ones from the top. A round starts with 60 seconds; each word longer than 3 letters gives back (length − 3) seconds, so a 5-letter word is +2 s and an 8-letter word is +5 s. Scoring doubles with every letter: 160 points for 4 letters, 2,560 for 8. The round ends when the clock is empty, never because nothing is left.

Lettrio is free, needs no account, works offline, and is available in six languages, each with its own dictionary and weekly leaderboard. The daily challenge can be played in the browser without installing anything.

What Lettrio is not

It is not a Boggle: no fixed 3-minute grid, no shared board between players except in the daily challenge and in duels with friends. There is no matchmaking against strangers. If you want classic Boggle rules on a phone, Boggle With Friends is the official one.
